African Diaspora Heritage CUP[Cultural Unity Project]

African Diaspora Heritage CUP is a project initiated by the student arm of Perez Tours Nigeria. This project was formed from the African Diaspora Heritage Trail Conference under the pioneering of the Bermuda Government.

ADHT Cup is proposed to be an under-17 Youth Football Championship that would be played amongst countries of African heritage. We are on our way to ensure that this Cup-Match would be a FIFA endorsed tournament. The primary aims of this project is to strengthening the bond of unity and also develop the future of sports among the intended participating countries, as the tournament would be hosted rotationally amongst these countries once every other year. 20 countries has been proposed to start the football challenge, these countries are: Bermuda, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Senegal, Ghana, Cuba, Brazil, Canada, Nigeria, Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica, Turks & Caicos, Barbados, Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Montserrat, Pitcairn Island, Haiti, Vatican Island. A very significant thing about the ADHTCUP is that we propose that every country would have an opportunity to host the competition as it would always be a rotational event.

The ADHT-CUP would not only be a football challenge it would be a time of celebrating freedom and also an opportunity for Africans and Afro-Caribbean to come together once every other year under this cultural unity project. There would be several cultural performances to reflect upon the Slave-Trade Era and other historic scenarios that related to the celebration of the black-race. No doubt we believe the project would also be a means of developing some under-developing partner countries. The cultural aspect of the ADHT is a very vital one as every participating country would have an opportunity of promoting their country this would be done exactly like the march-past ceremony of the Olympics.

A 10 man committee would be formed by Perez Tours which would comprise of members from the ministry of tourism or Nigerian Tourism Development Cooperation, Nigeria Football Federation, and Sponsors of this very project. The committee would be looking into numerous ways of making the ADHT CUP a great success.

The event would be held in panache where new innovation would be added to football so as to make it very outstanding and dynamic. For instance, the players might file into the stadium with chains tied to each of them, signifying the way our ancestors were treated and another process might be observed to set them loose, also signifying that gone forever are the inhumane act of slavery.

So as to make this dream a reality, we have decided to kick-start the project by organizing a ‘home and away’ under-17 friendly football match between Nigeria and Bermuda. The Premier of Bermuda as given his blessing for this match to be played between Nigeria and Bermuda. We believe this test-run match both home and away would be an avenue to study and plan for the bigger event which would be amongst other countries of the Caribbean and Africa.

Finally, we hope that ADHT CUP would be the project that would help African descendants track their origin, and also give them a sense of belonging.
